The client wished to have a modern house with the characteristics of a “Chettinad-style”.
The plot was 60’ by 80’. The plan was a contemporary C shape plan, with a garden coming in the front, on the side and at the back. There is a view into a garden from every room.
There is a central courtyard incepted from the characteristics of a Chettinad house. The courtyard is a narrow rectangle with a double height space and a skylight on the top. The courtyard is treated as a dry garden. There is also a view into the external garden from the courtyard.
Though the internal treatment is done in line with the “Chettinad-style”, the exterior was treated in a modern style with large cantilevers and projections.
